Changing gears: Passenger Vehicles inventory rises with an increase in retail auto sales
Where compared to the same month last year, automobile (auto) retail sales in India increased by an amazing 14% in July, as well as thanks to a boom in the rural economy, and high product availability, and also new product introductions.
Afterall the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (Fada) reports that although passenger cars (PVs) showed a 10% growth during this time, and as well as PV inventory levels have risen to a record high of 67–72 days, or Rs 73,000 crore worth of stock.
The financial sustainability of dealers is at danger because of this. In July 2023, there were only 50–55 days of inventory, or a stock value of Rs 49,833 crore. Inventory had a stock value of Rs 60,000 crore and was between 62 and 67 days old as of June 2024.
“The market is performing well. The highest level of inventory we have ever experienced is our main worry. Our original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners are aware of this. Inventory pile-ups, which previously only affected tiny cars, are increasingly occurring in all sectors, including sport utility vehicles, according to C S Vigneshwar, vice-president of Fada.
Two-wheeler (2W) sales increased by 17%, and PV sales by 10%, three-wheeler sales by 13%, and commercial vehicles (CVs) by 6%, yet also contributing significantly to the July retail sales growth. As well as Tractors, on the other hand, continued to perform poorly, declining 12% year over year (Y-o-Y).
And also the automobile sales increased 7.3% sequentially. Sales increased by a meagre 0.73 percent year over year in June.
Because of the robust rural economy, the beneficial effects of the monsoon, and government support initiatives to raise rural incomes, the 2W category experienced significant growth. Despite market slowdowns in some areas, heavy rains, and increased competition, new product introductions and better stock availability also had a significant impact, according to Vigneshwar.
The Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme deadline and discounts contributed to a rise in EV sales in this area. Nearly all of the companies in the 2W segment, including the market leader Hero MotoCorp (10%), Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (23%) 2TVS Motor Company (18%), and Bajaj Auto (10%), showed healthy growth.
PV sales increased significantly as a result of new model releases and alluring pricing schemes.
