The next Mahindra Thar five-door has removed its camouflage to reveal more about its design ahead of its anticipated August 15, 2024 public launch. Unlike its three-door sibling, the much awaited addition to the Thar family has a unique front end. While Mahindra has registered a number of names for its vehicles, the Mahindra Thar Armada is the anticipated moniker for the five-door model.

The edge is where the most alteration is visible. Instead of the recognisable three-door model’s grille, the Mahindra Thar Armada features a distinctive six-slot design with a horizontal slat traversing it. With C-shaped DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) framing them, the legendary round headlights of the Thar are probably now sporting LED projector modules for the first time. The C-pillar of the five-door Thar is angled, in contrast to that of the three-door model.

Nonetheless, a certain design cues never change, such as the recognisable door handles, traditional mirrors, and fender-mounted indicators. With the camera mounted on the door mirrors, the spy shot also reveals the presence of a 360-degree camera, which is an intriguing addition.

Additional expected features

The next Mahindra Thar Armada’s base and top-end versions may differ from one another, according to leaked photos. The top-of-the-line model may have sleek alloy wheels and contemporary LED headlamps for improved visibility, while the base model may have simple steel wheels and halogen headlamps for a more utilitarian appearance.

The base model’s interior could also differ, with manual air conditioning controls and a smaller infotainment screen. On the other hand, the top-tier model might include the convenience of automated climate control along with a larger touchscreen akin to the XUV 400.

Furthermore, a sunroof might only be available on the Thar Armada’s most expensive grade levels. These are only a few of the possible differences; closer to the debut date, a more comprehensive image of the capabilities available in each model should become apparent.

Beyond this, earlier spy photos suggested the presence of a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system—possibly derived from the Mahindra XUV 3XO—and a fully digital instrument cluster. The list of features can also include a possible sunroof and rear AC vents.

There will probably be a choice between two well-known engines to power the Mahindra Thar Armada: a 2.0-liter turbo-petrol and a 2.2-liter diesel. With 174 horsepower, the diesel engine—which is anticipated to be borrowed and tweaked from the Mahindra Scorpio-N—should provide a potent driving experience.

The 2.0-liter turbo-petrol offers a powerful 201 horsepower for customers looking for a petrol choice. A six-speed manual or automatic transmission with seamless shifts is probably going to be mated to both engines. For improved off-road capability, four-wheel drive will probably be standard, but Mahindra may also provide rear-wheel drive versions to satisfy customers on a tighter budget. Customers can select the Mahindra Thar Armada that best fits their needs and budget thanks to this two-pronged strategy.
