For Chrome OS users in India, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has released a warning. The national nodal agency disclosed that numerous vulnerabilities were found in Google’s operating system in its most recent vulnerability note. The Long-Term Support (LTS) channel for ChromeOS versions prior to 120.0.6099.315 (platform version: 15662.112) was among the impacted software, according to CERT-In.

According to the vulnerabilities noted by CERT-In, which operates under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, the aforementioned ChromeOS versions have a high severity rating. This means that malicious actors might use these flaws to execute arbitrary codes on a system. Due to the “Heap buffer overflow in WebRTC and Use after free in Media Session” issues, attackers may be able to trick users into visiting a website and compromise the system by engaging in destructive and malicious activities.

A buffer overflow happens when the amount of data exceeds the buffer’s memory limit. In other words, WebRTC gives applications that use web pages the ability to communicate in real time. They may consist of audio, speech, generic data, and more. The second mistake has to do with running programmes in an improper manner while using dynamic memory.

Google’s ChromeOS is a thin-client version of Windows that runs on computers.

“An attacker could get a victim to visit a specially designed web page in order to take advantage of these vulnerabilities. If these vulnerabilities are successfully exploited, an attacker may be able to run any code on the targeted system, according to CERT-In. CERT-In advises users to update ChromeOS to the most recent version in order to patch the vulnerabilities as a precaution.

Users should avoid visiting websites that can install dangerous scripts on their devices or clicking on dubious links as part of further safety precautions. Installing an antivirus programme and doing routine system scans with up-to-date definitions will help you stay safe. Additionally, you should only download files and software from reputable and approved websites.
