The fact that electric vehicles don’t use fossil fuels has made them the most environmentally friendly form of transportation in the world. However, the chairman of Maruti Suzuki believes that hybrid automobiles are less polluting than electric cars in the context of the Indian auto industry. Maruti Suzuki, the biggest passenger car manufacturer in India, offers the Grand Vitara SUV and the Invicto MPV, two powerful hybrid vehicles. It hasn’t yet joined the electric car market.

The chairman of Maruti Suzuki, RC Bhargava, praised the Uttar Pradesh government’s move to exempt hybrid vehicles from registration taxes in a recent interview with Business Standard. In his opinion, it would be more sensible to lower taxes on hybrid cars in India in order to efficiently meet the Center’s goal of reducing carbon emissions.

“The fact is that at present, hybrids emit lesser carbon despite using fuel than pure play electric cars,” said Bhargava while discussing why hybrid vehicles make more sense than electric cars in an effort to reduce pollution. This is because electric vehicles (EVs) require charging, yet 76% of the nation’s electricity still comes from coal rather than renewable sources. Europe, on the other hand, produces electricity that is much cleaner, with 30% of its electricity coming from coal-based power. In India, the percentage of renewable energy has increased by just 4-5 percentage points over the past ten years.”
